الأمان
One of Morocco's calmest, safest cities
Morocco's capital is its most composed city: green, orderly and unhurried, with a UNESCO-listed heritage that spans Roman ruins, medieval minarets and 20th-century civic grandeur. Rabat wears its status lightly, there is little of the hustle of Marrakech or Fès here.
On a bluff above the river Bou Regreg sits the Kasbah of the Udayas, a whitewashed-and-blue quarter of Andalusian calm; across the water lies its twin city, Salé. For travellers who want history and beauty without the intensity, Rabat is a graceful surprise.
A layered history
Rabat's story runs deep: the Roman and later Islamic site of Chellah, the unfinished 12th-century Hassan Tower and its vast mosque, and the Almohad walls that still ring the city. In 2012 its blend of historic and modern heritage earned UNESCO World Heritage status.
Under the French protectorate Rabat became the administrative capital, gaining wide avenues and civic buildings that sit comfortably beside the older city. That mix of eras, all well kept, is the capital's particular charm.
Culture & pace
As the seat of government and the royal palace, Rabat is dignified and green, with parks, gardens and a long ocean-and-river frontage. It is relaxed and easy to walk, with far less tourist pressure than the imperial cities, a place to breathe between headline destinations.
