الأمان

Safe; a practical port-and-border city, usual awareness

On Morocco's north-eastern Mediterranean coast, Nador sits beside the vast Marchica lagoon (Mar Chica), a shimmering inland sea nearly separated from the ocean by a long sandbar. Long a busy port and border city near the Spanish enclave of Melilla, Nador is being reimagined around its remarkable lagoon.

This is an authentic, workaday Morocco with a Mediterranean edge and strong Rifian and Spanish influences. For travellers curious about the country beyond the classic circuit, and for birdwatchers drawn to the lagoon's wetlands, Nador offers a genuine, uncrowded eastern gateway.

The Marchica lagoon

Nador's defining feature is the Marchica lagoon, one of the largest in the Mediterranean, a shallow, sheltered body of water rich in birdlife and ringed by beaches and reed beds. A long-term development programme is transforming its shores with promenades, marinas and eco-tourism, while conservation protects its wetlands.

A crossroads city

Nador's character comes from its position: a Mediterranean port beside the Spanish enclave of Melilla, deeply Rifian, and shaped by generations of movement between Morocco and Europe. It is a place of ferries, markets and mixed influences rather than monuments, real, unvarnished and welcoming.

When to go

Summer brings warm sea and lively beaches along the lagoon's outer sandbar; spring and autumn are excellent for birdwatching and comfortable exploring. Winters are mild but quieter.
