الأمان
Very relaxed and safe; the wind is the main thing to plan around
Three hours west of Marrakech, Essaouira is Morocco with the volume turned down: a walled port city of whitewashed walls and blue shutters, wide beaches and a steady Atlantic breeze. The medina is a UNESCO-listed grid, refreshingly easy to navigate, full of art galleries, thuya-wood workshops and cats dozing on ramparts.
Once the port of Timbuktu's caravans, later a haven for artists and musicians, Essaouira has always drawn free spirits. It is the perfect counterpoint to the intensity of the imperial cities: relaxed, breezy and made for long seafood lunches.
A short history
Fortified in its present form in the 18th century by Sultan Mohammed III, who hired a European architect to design the port, Essaouira (then Mogador) became Morocco's window on Atlantic trade. Its ramparts, sea-facing bastions and gridded medina reflect that cosmopolitan, planned origin, a striking contrast to the organic mazes of Fès and Marrakech.
Wind, waves & music
The same reliable wind that cools Essaouira makes it a world-class spot for kitesurfing and windsurfing, and a gentler place to learn to surf outside the summer peak. The city is also synonymous with Gnaoua music, celebrated each year at a festival that fills the streets with trance rhythms.
When to go
Spring and autumn bring the best balance of sunshine and manageable wind. Summer is popular and lively but windier; winter is mild, quiet and atmospheric. Whatever the season, pack a layer, the Atlantic breeze is ever-present.
