الأمان
Relaxed and safe; steep, uneven lanes call for good shoes
Tucked into the folds of the Rif mountains, Chefchaouen is unlike anywhere else in Morocco: a medina painted in blues, from powder to cobalt, tumbling down the hillside in a cascade of steps, arches and flower-hung doorways. It is small, walkable and endlessly photogenic.
Founded in 1471, "Chaouen" was closed to outsiders for centuries, which is part of why it feels so intact. Today it is a place to slow right down, to wander, to sip mint tea on a rooftop, and to walk out into the mountains that cradle it.
Why it is blue
No one is entirely sure. Theories range from a Jewish tradition brought by refugees, to keeping mosquitoes away, to simply keeping the walls cool, and, today, keeping a beloved tradition alive. Whatever the origin, the result is magical, and the townsfolk repaint faithfully each year.
Culture & pace
Chefchaouen is gentler and more laid-back than Morocco's big cities, with far less hassle. It rewards slowness: there are few must-see monuments and everything is the point, the light, the colours, the cats on the steps. Modest dress is appreciated, as ever, and Rifian Amazigh culture runs deep here.
When to go
Spring and early autumn are loveliest, with mild mountain air and flowers against the blue. Summer is warm and busiest; winter is cool and can be wet, with the occasional dusting of snow on the surrounding peaks.
