الأمان

A safe big city; normal urban street awareness applies

Casablanca is Morocco's largest city and economic capital: fast, modern and outward-looking, with a skyline of glass beside some of the finest art-deco and Mauresque architecture in Africa. It is where Morocco does business, dines out and looks to the future.

Most travellers pass through, it is the country's main international gateway, but the city rewards a day or two: the vast Hassan II Mosque rising over the Atlantic, the palm-lined boulevards of the centre-ville, and a dining and nightlife scene with real energy.

A modern history

Though its roots are old, Casablanca as we know it is largely a 20th-century creation. Under the French protectorate it was rebuilt as a showcase of modern town planning, blending art-deco with Moroccan motifs into the distinctive "Mauresque" style that still defines the centre.

The monumental Hassan II Mosque, completed in 1993, gave the city a spiritual landmark to match its ambition: one of the largest mosques in the world, built partly over the sea, with a soaring minaret visible for miles.

Culture & pace

Casablanca is Morocco's most cosmopolitan city, less about monuments, more about atmosphere, cuisine and contemporary life. Dress is relaxed by Moroccan standards, though the mosque requires modest attire. It is a place to feel the country's modern pulse rather than tick off medieval sights.
