安全

Very safe; the real risks are sun, heat and dehydration

Merzouga is the doorway to Erg Chebbi, a sea of wind-sculpted dunes that rise up to 150 metres and turn from gold to rose to deep amber as the sun moves. This is the Sahara of the imagination: silence so complete you can hear your own heartbeat, and a night sky thick enough to read by.

People come for one unforgettable sequence, a camel out into the dunes at dusk, a night in a camp under the stars, and sunrise from the crest of a dune. Handled well, with the right camp and guide, it becomes the emotional peak of an entire Morocco journey.

The landscape

Erg Chebbi is one of only two large sand ergs in Morocco, a compact but spectacular dune field on the edge of the Sahara, framed by flat hammada desert and the occasional oasis. Its scale and colour, especially at dawn and dusk, are what make Merzouga worth the long drive to reach it.

Nearby, the seasonal lake Dayet Srji can draw flamingos and other birds after rain, and small villages like Khamlia keep alive the Gnaoua music brought across the desert generations ago.

Getting there

Merzouga is remote, and the journey is part of the experience. Most travellers arrive overland from Marrakech (around nine hours via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, the Dades and Todra gorges) or from Fès (around seven hours through the Middle Atlas and Ziz Valley), often splitting the drive with an overnight stop.

The nearest airport is Errachidia, roughly two hours away. We design the route so the drive delivers its own highlights, kasbahs, gorges and mountain passes, rather than being time simply endured.

When to go

October to April is the window: warm, clear days and cold, brilliant nights, bring layers, as desert temperatures drop sharply after dark. Spring and autumn are the sweet spot. Summer (June–August) is extreme, with daytime heat well above 40°C that makes long dune walks unwise.

Is Merzouga safe?

The Erg Chebbi area is very safe for visitors, and desert tourism is well established here. The genuine risks are environmental rather than human: sun, heat and dehydration. Travel with plenty of water, cover up against the sun, and always go into the dunes with an experienced local guide who knows the terrain.
