Safe and welcoming; remote, so plan logistics carefully

Far down Morocco's Atlantic coast, Dakhla occupies a slender peninsula where the Sahara slides straight into the sea. On one side, a vast turquoise lagoon of flat, warm water; on the other, the open ocean and empty desert beaches. The result is one of the world's great kitesurfing and windsurfing destinations.

This is Morocco at its most remote and elemental, big skies, constant wind, oysters farmed in the lagoon and a growing collection of stylish eco-camps. For active travellers and those seeking somewhere genuinely off the beaten track, Dakhla is a world apart.

Wind, water & wilderness

Dakhla's magic is its geography: a shallow, flat lagoon protected from the ocean swell, warmed by the sun and brushed by near-constant trade winds. It is close to ideal for learning to kitesurf and a dream for experienced riders, while the surrounding desert and coastline stay utterly wild.

Beyond the board

Even without a kite, Dakhla rewards: the lagoon's oysters are famous, the White Dune rises straight from the water, natural hot springs bubble nearby, and the coast draws migrating birds and, offshore, dolphins. It is a place to disconnect at the edge of the map.

Getting there

Dakhla is remote, roughly halfway down the coast between Agadir and the Mauritanian border. Most travellers fly in via Casablanca, with some seasonal direct routes from Europe. Because of the distance, Dakhla is best treated as a dedicated three-to-five-day trip rather than a quick add-on.

Bon à savoir

Questions fréquentes.

Yes, especially for kitesurfers and travellers seeking somewhere remote and elemental. Its flat-water lagoon is world-class for kiting, and even non-riders enjoy the oysters, dunes, hot springs and wild coast. It suits a dedicated trip rather than a quick stop.
