Seguridad

Very safe and orderly; mountain-weather awareness in winter

High in the Middle Atlas, Ifrane confounds every cliché of Morocco. Built by the French in the 1930s as a hill station, it has steep-roofed chalets, tidy gardens and lakes, and clean mountain air, a town nicknamed "little Switzerland" that turns white with snow each winter.

Around it stretch the great cedar forests of the Middle Atlas, home to Barbary macaques, and the ski slopes of Michlifen. For travellers who want cool, green nature and a complete change of scene between the imperial cities, Ifrane is a refreshing surprise.

Little Switzerland

Ifrane's alpine appearance is no accident: it was purpose-built as a cool-climate retreat, and its architecture, parks and manicured order still set it apart from anywhere else in Morocco. The town's emblem is the stone Lion of Ifrane, and it is home to a prestigious international university.

Cedars, macaques & snow

The surrounding Middle Atlas is the real draw: vast forests of ancient Atlas cedar, home to troops of Barbary macaques, and the nearby Michlifen and Mischliffen slopes where Moroccans come to ski in winter. In warmer months it is a paradise for walks, picnics and cool escapes from the heat of the plains.
